Action Strategy – Develop an “Adopt-a-School” volunteer network to work in schools and provide assistance to teachers as needed to bolster education efforts.

• Administered a survey to all principals in Shawnee County asking their views on having volunteers in schools and where they could be used most effectively. We received 44 responses stating they are interested in having volunteers in the schools to assist in various ways.
• Researched possible ways to electronically manage and track volunteers in schools. “Volunteer Solutions”, an online matching and tracking program, at United Way of Greater Topeka was viewed as the strongest option.
• Next steps: United Way will be the lead in convening a community committee with representation from education and business to develop an implementation work plan.
