Downtown Revitalization: Capital District Project

The goal of the Capital District Project is to reestablish downtown Topeka as a family-oriented, economically sound, culturally vital and visually attractive regional destination–the center and symbol of Topeka and Shawnee County.

We plan to do this by addressing many of the issues that are commonly perceived as keeping downtown from becoming a vibrant center of our community such as:

  • Attracting additional businesses and strengthening existing businesses
  • Construction challenges such as sidewalk closures and maintaining business access and viability
  • Parking issues and easy access to businesses
  • Traffic flow and patterns
  • Entertainment and public art

While this project is much more than a simple street scape change, we’re starting here because the City plans to repave Kansas Avenue this year. Making changes in conjunction with this resurfacing project gives us the opportunity to save thousands of dollars later when modifications are needed to improve parking and traffic flow.

RDG Planning & Design in conjunction with their Topeka based partners Cook, Flatt & Strobel Engineering, HTK Architects and Latimer Sommers & Associates will desgin the street scape for S. Kansas Avenue. A Downtown Design Center opened January 13 and will have hours that those interested can share their ideas for the improvements to S. Kansas Avenue.

I see the bus service into Topeka from other cities as a big concern...do you realize those folks that ride the grayhound bus into Topeka are let off the bus in the street? Even though there is a lovely city bus station just down the street. Try to buy a bus ticket out of Topeka (this is being done in an add-on, totally unsafe area adjoining a service station, with no seating, people sit on the curb to wait for the bus). How do you think people from out of town view this city? Cheap might be a word that comes to mind. My vision of Topeka, would be having a way to get into or out of town, how can we rid ourselves of this stagima?
